Khary D. Hornsby, J.D.
Thanks for reaching out to learn more about working with me. My background is in science and law and I’ve been in international relations leadership roles for almost 20 years. I’m also a trained yoga asana instructor and have studied Latin and African dance for over 15 years. Something those pursuits have in common: connection (to self, others, energy and space).
I view the ability to create and sustain authentic and secure connection as the greatest gift we can give and receive in life. Further, I view the skillset to connect across real and perceived differences as a superpower - a panacea for what ails humanity. And the beautiful thing about effectively connecting across differences is that it’s a competency that can be learned, authentically, from the inside out.
Unfortunately, most of us were never taught this. Thus, we’ve learned to view difference with skepticism, impatience and a lack of curiosity. In the words of Audrey Lourde, as a society “we have no patterns for relating across our human differences as equals.” This not only impacts our relationships with others, it also impacts our capacity for self compassion. Afterall, we can’t possibly cope with the revelations that can occur from deep, inner exploration if we’re ultimately fearful of the unfamiliar.
I was raised in Detroit, Michigan but spent significant parts of my childhood in California, South Dakota and Minnesota. Experiencing American diversity was a great teacher. But my adult life started when I left the U.S. to do scientific research in Beijing, China in the late 90’s. A subsequent move to France further provided the perfect mix of friction and nourishment I needed to begin to deeply reflect upon the lens through which I had lived and wanted to live.
Nothing was spared as I was presented the opportunity view all of myself: my gender, ethnicity, spirituality, sexuality, and more through different cultural filters. I was presented the chance to ask the question: who am I? Not who I was in relation to others, or what box I check on forms, where I was from, or who I was expected to be. And I was given the space to truly seek out and sit with the answers.
I’m grateful to have made a career of working in educational institutions to create similar personal and professional growth opportunities for others. And coaching further allows me to hold space for others to pursue vital existential questions in a bespoke, supportive and authentic way.
